چکیده

A new multiple access protocol is developed for optical local area networks based on a passive star topology. The protocol uses wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), and combines the advantages of both random-access and scheduled-access sharing schemes, e.g., fixed pre-assigned TDMA and WDM, into a protocol that is highly bandwidth-efficient. No central control is required among users, and the amount of processing required by each station is small. Time is divided in fixed-sized slots. Before transmitting its data, a station must compete with others for the right to use a slot in a pre-assigned wavelength, using a collision-free procedure. This results in a protocol that is suitable for networks where the number of users is larger than the number of available channels. The scheme can operate with at least a single tunable transmitter/receiver pair in each station. The paper includes an analysis of the maximum throughput and delay characteristics of the presented scheme. Several models are also developed and compared to the results obtained from numerous simulations. Kcy~cords: Optical LANs; Multiaccess protocols; Wavelength division multiplexing

Performance analysis of the collision avoidance procedure of the advanced infrared (AIr) CSMA/CA protocol for wireless LANs

The Infrared Data Association (IrDA) Advanced Infrared (AIr) protocol for indoor optical wireless LANs is examined. AIr Medium Access Control (MAC) layer utilizes a Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) scheme to coordinate medium access. To deal with hidden stations, AIr employs a Request To Send / Clear To Send (RTS/CTS) reservation scheme and a long Collision Avoid...

A Novel MAC Protocol with Fast Collision Resolution for Wireless LANs

Design of efficient medium access control (MAC) protocols with both high throughput performance and highdegree of fairness performance is a major focus in distributed contention-based MAC protocol research. In this paper, we propose a novel and efficient contention-based MAC protocol for wireless local area networks, namely, the Fast Collision Resolution (FCR) algorithm. This algorithm is devel...

Performance Analysis for a New Medium Access Control Protocol in Wireless LANs

One fundamental issue in high-speed wireless local area networks (LANs) is to develop efficient medium access control (MAC) protocols. In this paper, we focus on the performance improvement in both MAC layer and transport layer by using a novel medium access control protocol for high-speed wireless LANs deploying carrier sense multiple access/collision avoidance (CSMA/CA). We first present a re...
